Obedience II

Text:Genesis 22

Someone must need another message on obedience. I suppose we all do because we all struggle in one sense with obedience. This is something that goes against our flesh and is a constant battle. Even Paul said he does the things he knows he is not supposed to do. He also does not do the things he should. We must be lead by the Spirit of Truth and the Word.

The Bible is filled with examples of obedience for us to follow. Abraham was told to offer the child of promise as a sacrifice to the Lord. Abraham I bet did not understand what the Lord was doing but we are told that in the morning, he left to obey the Lord. He did not hesitate or argue with the Lord. Moses also gives us an example in Exodus. He did argue with the Lord but in the end was obedient and lead the children of Israel out of bondage. They had their moments but eventually arrived at the promise of God.

Joshua also gives us an example as he lead the people against the city of Jericho. Once again, he probably did not understand what the Lord was doing or why. However., he obeyed and the Lord won a great victory against the city.

Mary was obedient when the Lord had her do something that would change her life forever. Mary and Joseph would never go back to “normal.” Then of course, Jesus gives us the ultimate example as He followed the Father all the way to physical agony and death.

When we are obedient, there are several facts that are in play. First, our obedience is an act of love for God, John 14:15. If we love God, we will keep His commandments and obey Him. Obedience also bring blessings of course, Deut 28:1-14. This does not mean never ending bank accounts but rather true blessings from God. Third, obedience always requires sacrifice, Luke 9:23. Christ again, gave His all. Obedience is also a choice, Deut 30:19. Lastly, obedience leads to spiritual growth, James 1:22-25. When we obey the Lord’s command, we see Him in ways that we would not otherwise. May we obey the Lord at all costs.
