The God Of Promises

Text:II Peter 3:5-10; Matt. 21; Zach. 9:9

Today we look at God and His promises. Who is God to make promises? Can we trust His promises? What are the promises? We see in Matt. 21 that Jesus Christ rides into Jerusalem on the foal of a donkey. There are several implications to this that we will discuss in just a moment, however, we see this is in direct fulfillment of prophecy given over a thousand year prior. In Zachariah we see that this prophecy was given with specific detail and reason. Christ rode in on the foal of a donkey, lowly, and having salvation. Now the people soon realized that the salvation Christ brought was not from the tyrannical Roman Empire. They did not understand that it was more important than that. It was salvation from the world, flesh, death and judgement of God because of sin. Christ indeed is the conquering King of an eternal kingdom.

The scripture say as well that the messiah would ride lowly. This of course is showing the humility with which Christ, the conquering King, came. Christ does not force Himself on anyone. Christ simply calls any who would believe to follow Him and receive forgiveness of sin and life in every way. This is the God of promises that we worship.

God’s promises are absolutely amazing and there are so many we could not fit them in this sermon or any one sermon for sure. A couple are the fact that God promises to never leave us or forsake us, Heb. 13:5. Another is that His children can never be separated from His love, Rom. 8:38, 39. God also promises that all things work together for His glory and praise, Rom. 8:28. God will also complete the work that He starts in each one of us, Phil. 1:6. That plan is also for the good not evil, Jer. 29:11. God promises us peace as well, Is. 26:3. Then, God promises us to come back and call us to Himself, Matt. 26:29. Christ promises that He would not have communion again until the church is gathered together in all its beauty and we all share this cup as one. One day, our King is coming back! One day, His kingdom will be realized on this earth! One day, we will spend eternity with God because of the work of Christ!. May we remember His promises and live in Truth!
