Text:II Peter 3:8-13
The question last week was what kind of person ought you and I to be? This is in light of the fact that this world is not all there is. This earth will one day be destroyed and a new heaven and a new earth will be created. This life is very temporal and only a vapor in comparison. We should live holy in our lifestyle and godliness.
Today we continue on and we are told by Peter to look for and hasten the day of the Lord. How does this work and what does this even mean? Well, the Bible says that no one knows the day or time of the Lord’s return but we can accomplish this command if we understand what the words actually mean. Looking for means to carry on a business. We see this idea in Luke 19 with the three stewards. Two were wise and grew the master’s investment while one fool buried the money and gave back to the master only that which he received. God has given us so many talents and gifts that need to be invested and used for His glory. What are you doing with the goods the Master has given you? Are you and I being good stewards of the Master’s possessions?
The word for hastening mean to speed or hurry by extra effort. This is the same idea found in Romans 8:19-23. God’s children are earnestly expecting Christ to return and make all things right. This time could be any moment and you and I must live with haste and be full of faith.
We must also remember the promise of God, Eph. 3:13-ff. No matter how much suffering we go through, God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above anything we could ask or think. God loves His children and will always receive the glory from them. May we submit to the working of the Lord, hasten the day of His return and judgement upon the earth, and remember His promises. We must remain firm in the faith and know that every word from our Father is true and right. His promises are firm and nothing shall break our Father’s love or cause His promises to waiver. God the Father is our Rock and and mighty Fortress in the time of trouble and the time of plenty. Glorify the Lord today!
