Text:I Timothy 5:1-8
Well, this week is one of my pet peeves. It makes my skin crawl when I hear a Christian, or anyone, say, “Good luck.” What does that even mean? It literally means good chance and carries the idea that what ever happens is going to happen so may you have good events that happen to you today. That is crazy, unbiblical, pagan and fatalistic.
First, the idea that what ever is going to happen happens and there is nothing you can do about it is very disheartening and fatalistic. Of course there are things that happen out of our control but most a life is based upon choices. It is not just left up to the whim of some false gods sitting in the clouds somewhere just letting things happen. You, I and all of mankind make choices every day that have real consequences that effect people in the world.
Luck is contrary to the sovereignty of God as well, Eph. 1:11; Psalms 115:3; Is. 45:9, 10. God is on control and there are laws that are in place that are enacted by our choices. Every choice you make will indeed effect those around you and they may never even know or understand. If you choose to leave legos in the hallway before you go to bed outside of the bathroom, what do you think will happen? Dad is willing to get up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and be over joyed when he gets the foot massage that he always desired.
If you throw a rock in the lake, it creates ripples that go out. More than that, the rock then falls to the bottom of the lake and hits a catfish. The other catfish laugh and tell him better luck next time. How foolish. How silly to think that things are going to happen today by random chance events and you and I just have to take it. Instead, let’s get back to the Idea that we have a responsibility to make good choices and trust in the Lord for the outcomes and the final destination.
Instead, maybe use the biblical phrases like God speed, or God bless, or may God’s face shine upon you, Numbers 6:24-ff. May we the church, lift up Christ and depend on His sovereignty every day. May our choices glorify the Most High!
