Unity Of the Body

Text:I Corinthians 12; Philippians 2

Today, we are continuing on the idea of unity in the church. This is something that has been an issue from the beginning of time and will continue until Christ sets up His Kingdom on this earth. Man has always wanted control and power. Satan has always tempted man with such things. We all by our very nature are selfish and self-absorbed. Praise the name of Christ, we take on a new nature in Christ and all things become new. Last week we discussed the fact that the body is made up of many member that all serve a different role yet form one body. You and I are many members yet form one body or community in the Lord. As time goes on, we will need community more and more and will have to fight to maintain the oneness of mind and soul.

We are called into one love, accord, and mind. One love means that we all have the same affection or benevolence. We all should love the Lord first and foremost. This is pivotal in being one body. One accord means similar sentiment or being like minded. This is separation from the world and it’s systems and living for the spiritual world together as one body. Then we are told to be of one mind which carries with it the idea of thought process or being disposed. Our thoughts should be to glorify the Father through Jesus Christ and Him alone. Remember, we are new creatures and the number one enemy that fights against unity is self. Our selfishness and self love will always drive wedges between believers and cause issues in the body. It is like splinters that irritate and get infected if not taken care of.

God gives us an example in Himself, Deuteronomy 6:4; John 10:30. Unity is possible through Christ and Him alone, Eph. 2:14-ff. Christ is our peace yet we try so many other avenues that all lead to dead ends. Christ broke down the walls of division by sacrificing His very body. Our unity is based purely on Christ and our relationship with Him. It is not within our flesh but possible through our relationship with Christ. The stronger our relationship, the more unified we are and the less offended we become. May the Lord strengthen us and unify His body. Eph. 4:15, 16
