Text:Isaiah 53:1-7; Romans 3:21-26
Today we are at week three of our Advent journey in 2024. We have looked at the prophecy of Christ the babe. We discussed the stable and the virgin birth along with other ideas and questions. Today we start to look at Christ, the Lamb. This is the idea that Christ was born in fulfillment of prophecy in every way to give Himself as the ultimate payment for the sin of the world.
In the Old Testament there are many very specific prophecies concerning the death of Christ. First, Christ would deliver a fatal blow to the devil, however, His heel would be bruised by satan. This was prophesied at the beginning of time and shows us that the plan of salvation was indeed put in place long before the foundation of the world as the Bible tells us.
Second, Christ was to come through the least tribe of Israel, Micah 5:2. This carries the idea that not only was Christ humble but also that He was coming as an ordinary man. Christ did not flaunt the fact that He was and is God in the flesh. Again, Christ came to serve and become the perfect Lamb.
Third, Christ was to be delivered for our sin, Ps. 22. This passage is from David and is so specific that many critics of the Bible argue that this could not have been prophesied 1000 years before Christ’s death. However, this is exactly what happened. Matter of fact, the fulfillment is almost, word for word in some cases. Christ indeed cried out in Matthew 27, “My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?” We also see the pharisees and others at the cross yelled out insults and mocked the Lord.
They shouted that Christ saved others but He cannot save Himself. They mocked that if Christ was the Messiah then He should come off the cross. They also nailed Him to the cross piercing His hands and feet. Lastly, they divided Christ’s clothes just as prophesied. Only God could be so specific and have total fulfillment over 1000 years later. Man could not orchestrate that with such precision if we tried. Christ indeed was born miraculously in a stable by a virgin to become the perfect Lamb of God that washes away the sin of all of mankind including yours and mine. Worship the Lamb of God!
