Sundays In the Wood – Rooted And Growing In Christ

Text:Colossians 2

As we draw close to Londonderry Baptists Church’s 225 anniversary, we are reminded of the faithfulness and greatness of God and our Lord, Jesus Christ.   One fact that we are faced with as we look at the years of service to the community and surrounding communities is that God is faithful to them who are rooted and grounded in Him and God’s Word.  So, let us explore what this means and how it impacts our lives as we journey through Sundays in the Wood.

When you see a strong tree that gives much shade there is a lot going on under the ground that you do not see.  The root system is one of the most important systems in that tree.  There are things that can hinder or promote root growth.  Sometimes hard soil or rocky soil hinders growth.  Drought of course can be a big factor.  As well as imbalance in the levels of nutrients in the soil.  The list is almost endless.

What must we do?  We must break up the hard fallow ground, Jer. 4:1-3.  We must get all the rocks and other obstacles out of the way.  We need to lay aside every weight and those things which detract us, Heb. 12:1, 2.  We need to constantly take in the water of God’s Word daily and let it refresh our souls, John 4:14.  We also must strive for balance, Prov. 11:1.

When we take steps like these, we will then be able to grow strong.  We will be able to grow wide and tall as a testimony to the faithfulness of our Lord.  There is work that needs to be done in each of our soils, or souls, to promote good root growth.  You and I need to cultivate a daily work ethic of renewal and focus.  Once the ground is prepared, that does not mean that the gamer just sits around.  It is a continual work of weeding, fertilizing, removing obstacles, etc.

Will you be rooted in Truth?  Are you willing to put in the hard work to see roots grow strong and deep giving you the ability to hone God through faithful living?  Or will you be the tree that falls over when the wind blows, when the rain flows, and the storm grow strong.  May God’s people strand strong and faithfully!
