What Sort Of Persons Ought Ye To Be?

Text:II Peter 3:8-13

What a question asked by Paul. What sort of person ought we to be? I suppose you would have to be honest first and understand what sort of person you are right now. You and I are by nature fallen and disobedient to God. This is the flesh that we have to fight each and every day. This is the world that we live in. Praise be to God, He has overcome this world and the flesh. You and, as children of God can say no to this world and the flesh.
This question also comes on the truth that all we know right now shall be dissolved one day. Remember that this world is not our home. Our bodies are not our final tabernacle, praise His name! We are pilgrims passing through and trying to bring others into the Light along the way. Stop putting so much emphasis on this world and the things that are temporal.

Paul goes on to answer this question by giving us a tall order to fill. First we are to be holy in all manner of lifestyle. This carries with it an idea of total purity. How did you do this last week? How did you do this morning? Most of us fail often. However, God desires us to be holy as He is holy. God has given us the ability to please the Father and glorify His name. God has given us the ability to rise above our flesh and live for Christ.
We must not be defiled with the king’s meat. This was a decision that Daniel and his friends made in captivity, Dan. 1:3-9. The fact is, you and I need to make a decision every moment of every day to not be defiled by this world. We must be separate from the philosophies and ways of the flesh. Instead, we are to be pure in heart, Ps. 51:10; Phil. 4:8; I Pet. 1:22; I Thess. 4:3-5.

We are also to be holy in all manner of godliness. May we strive to be godly constantly, I Tim. 4:8, 9. Godliness is a choice. Who will you let rule in your hearts today, tomorrow, and the rest of the week? Godliness takes sacrifice, Rom. 12:1, 2. We are to be living sacrifices for the Lord. This week, may we do all the the glory and honor of our Father, Col.3:17, 23. So, I ask you and myself the same question today. In light of the fact that this life will end and all that is shall be dissolved, what sort shall we be?
